Al Tanner
Al Tanner was a demanding coach. He accepted nothing less than the best efforts from his athletes. In return, his athletes provided him with a long line of outstanding teams. What they may not have realized is that he was providing his runners with the skills necessary to be productive adults. One of his athletes noted "No one at HTHS has touched so many lives, enabled so many college scholarships to be earned. . .and prepared young men to lead positive lives." From 1968 through the late seventies, his teams were perennial championship contenders and he developed many runners that rank with the best in the annals of New Jersey Cross Country. His 1972-72 team, inducted tonight, is but one example of quality teams that he produced by demanding that his athletes meet his expectations.
