George Maier George “Albie” Maier personified Haddon Township Athletics. Following a stellar career at Marshall University, he began his professional career with stints at Toms River and Northern Burlington High Schools. In 1964, he was appointed to be the first Athletic Director and Physical Education Department Chairman at the new Haddon Township High School and served in that capacity for twenty-five years. He oversaw and nurtured the athletic program, hiring highly qualified coaches who developed talented athletes who generated numerous championships throughout his tenure. He served South Jersey sports as an officer in numerous organizations, hosted numerous track meets, (including the George Rowland Relays,) and was recognized as the Athletic Director of the Year in 1981. He also has been inducted into the Marshall University Hall of Fame. Besides his duties as athletic director, “Mr. Maier” (those who were taught or played for him still find it hard to call him George) coached the HT Varsity football team for six years until chose to devote all of his time to the athletic director position. His players were taught fundamentals and good sportsmanship and were always a credit to the school. He still resides in Haddon Township with his wife Fran and enjoys visits from his children George Jr., Pam, Tom, Michael, Mary Margaret and Rick. “Mr. Maier” engendered respect through his dedication, strong will and discipline. Although he at times showed a gruff exterior, all who came to know him found a warm, caring soul who would do anything to help his students and colleagues. Despite his retirement thirteen years ago, for many, the first name that comes to mind when Haddon Township sports are mentioned is George Maier and the HT Hall of Fame is proud to honor him with this lifetime achievement award.
