George Maier, Jr. The Maier name is held in high regard in Haddon Twp. One of the reasons is because of the outstanding career of George Maier, Jr. who follows his father as the first father/son duo to be members of the HTHS Hall of Fame. In his career, George earned ten Varsity letters through his participation in football, wrestling and track. George was a punishing fullback on the football team and held the single game rushing record from 1974-99 until it was broken by Beau Sherry. He was named offensive MVP in both his junior and senior years and received numerous post-season honors including All Conference, All Group 2 and Second Team All South Jersey. As a grappler, George was named MVP of the Christmas Tournament on three separate occasions. After graduation, George attended Gettysburg University where, besides playing some football, he wrestled for four years, and, as a Senior, served the Bullets as Captain. George then spent 14 years as Head Wrestling Coach at Haddon Heights High School. He became the winningest wrestling coach in school history after building a successful program from a team that won one game in the year before he was hired. Tragically, George passed away in November, 2003.
