LuAnn Ashmen

Girls Basketball in the early days was thought to be too strenuous for young women and was played with six players on each team, two of whom played entirely in the defensive half of the court, two more only in the offensive end and two playing the entire court. Players such as Luann Ashmen helped to prove that all girls could compete using the whole court just as well as the boys. A tremendous scorer, Luann took advantage of the change to five players to become one of the dominant players in her era. Despite giving up many inches to her competitors, she had exceptional speed and was a deadly shooter and held the school scoring record for many years with a total of 1190 points in her three year Varsity career. Recently, the Courier Post included her in their list of the all-time best girls basketball players in the Classic Era. Her exploits were not limited to basketball. In the spring, she picked up a glove and bat and earned four letters in softball as a slick fielding, hard-hitting shortstop. She continued her athletic success after graduation playing basketball and softball at both Camden County and Flagler Colleges where she added more hardware for her mantel. Luann now lives in Glassboro.
