Jennie Capano

In the early years of HTHS, the answer to the question of who was the coach of a Hawks girl’s team was usually Jennie Capano. Jennie served as head coach of the field hockey and softball teams in their inaugural years and was also the assistant basketball coach. She later switched from softball to become head tennis coach. All told, Jennie coached Hawk teams for more than 30 seasons. An extremely organized person, she earned a reputation as a demanding coach who insisted upon hard work and dedication yet whose teams truly enjoyed competing against their rivals. She turned out many memorable squads highlighted by the West Jersey conference softball champs in 1964, 1965 and 1966 as well as her Colonial Conference tennis champs of 1970 and 1976. After she retired from coaching, she began to officiate field hockey, basketball and softball, activities in which she still participates. Jennie’s contributions to girl’s sports have been recognized by other organizations including a Retirement Service award from the South Jersey coaches of Women’s Sport and the Bess Taylor Distinguished Service Award from the Field Hockey Club of South Jersey.
