1989-90 Girls Basketball Team

The 1989-90 Haddon Township Girl’s Basketball team finished a successful regular season with a storybook run for a state Group I title in 1990. The team finished the regular season with a 20-4 record. The team finished second in the Colonial Conference behind state Group II champion Sterling. After a sound victory over Bordentown in the first round of the Group I tournament the team pulled together a great victory against Florence without their leading scorer Gail Shelly, who had an untimely case of the chicken pox. After a lopsided victory over Hammonton in the South Jersey Group I Championship game the Hawks moved on to face Keyport in the State Semifinals. The Hawks defeated Keyport in a tough game by the score of 61-55 to advance to the State Championship game against North Warren High School.

The Hawks faced a big challenge in North Warren in the name of 6’5 Patty Wysowaty. North Warren took control of the game early using its size to pull out to a 10-point lead. After some brilliant coaching adjustments by Head Coach Fran Mulroy, the Hawks were able to chip away at that lead and eventually take a 9-point lead into halftime. In the second half the Hawk’s pressure defense was too much for North Warren. The game ended with a 77-60 score and Haddon Township’s first state championship in girl’s basketball. Gail Shelly was named the game’s MVP for her 44-point performance. Sue Wallen and Danielle Tryka also scored in double figures in that game with 14 and 10 points respectively.

With the State Group I title in hand the Hawks were paired up against State Group III Champions, Sparta High School in the Second Annual Tournament of Champions. It was a tough game, but the amazing season ended with a 54-38 loss in the Tournament of Champions. The Hawks finished the season 25-5 and ranked 5th in South Jersey.

Besides Shelly, Wallen and Tryka, the letter winners on the team were Michelle Mooradian, Christine Sherman, Shawne Williams, Lisa Yoder and Micki Ulrey. Assisting Coach Mulroy were Glenn Shockley and Rich Foster.
