Kevin Kelly It goes without saying that basketball coaches like tall people. When the height is combined with shooting ability, toughness and game sense, they are ecstatic. Kevin Kelly most certainly made his coaches’ happy. Eventually topping out at 6’8”, Kevin served as Mr. Inside (to Mark Garlitos’ Mr. Outside) on the outstanding Hawk teams of 1973 and 1974. He broke the 1000 point barrier (ending with 1072) and led his team to the best record in Hawks boys’ basketball history, 21-5. He was named to the South Jersey All Group II team and was selected to the All South Jersey second team. He continued to display his basketball prowess at the University of Vermont, where as a junior, he refuted the myth that big men can’t shoot by finishing second in the country in free throw percentage with an amazing success rate of 92.3%. Following graduation, Kevin spent a year in France playing professionally before returning home. He now lives in Marietta, Georgia with his wife Mary Ellen, daughter Maggie and son Shane. |
