1967-68 Wrestling Team For three decades, the Haddon Township wrestling program, under Coach Miller Preston, was continuously ranked as one of the pre-eminent programs in South Jersey. The 1967-68 team is credited with being the squad that launched the program to those heights. A team that was superbly conditioned as well as having exceptional physical strength, the team often overcame a deficit with extensive use of the famous Haddon Township cradle move. The Hawks were co-champions of the Colonial Conference including a victory over a since dominant Paulsboro squad. The team then capped their season by sending eight grapplers to the District 28 finals and emerged with a revenge victory over archrival Haddonfield. Perhaps as impressive as the success of the team was the transmission of the love of the sport from Coach Preston to his wrestlers. His enthusiasm, extensive discussion of championship qualities and ability to simplify complicated moves and strategy created a lifelong love for the sport among his athletes. Three team members continued to wrestle in college and three others have since returned to Westmont to coach Haddon Twp. wrestlers themselves. |
