Nancy Porter Engman

In the early 1960’s, Haddon Township decided to open it’s own high school and stop the practice of sending its’ 9-12 grade students to Collingswood, Haddonfield and Audubon. In retrospect, the town fathers may have partially made this decision so that Nancy Porter could be claimed as Haddon Township’s alone. A member of the second graduating class (1966) of HTHS, Nancy is believed to be the first Hawk to earn 12 Varsity letters, participating in basketball, softball and field hockey. An outstanding performer in each sport, she garnered many awards including being the leading scorer in South Jersey field hockey in her senior year. As will be noted later, she also was a major contributor to the championship softball team in 1965. But her athletic achievements did not end with high school. She continued her education at Ursinus College where she played four years of basketball and field hockey. As a field hockey player, she was an outstanding halfback for Coach Eleanor Snell’s national powerhouse teams and she has been inducted into the UC Sports Hall of Fame. Post college, she has been a nationally ranked amateur golfer who captured Eastern United States Championship, Philadelphia City Championship and Pennsylvania State Championship. She also holds the record for holes in one in US Open competition with two.

She completed her education by earning a PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and now is a professor at Chestnut Hill College. Now living in Haverford, PA, she is married to Robert Engman and they are the proud parents of daughter Kelsey and son Andrew.
