Barbara and Reds Hyer

Community Service comes in many forms. Some people provide financial resources, some create opportunities for children to participate, some provide facilities for students. But this year’s inductees, Barbara and Reds Hyer, are being recognized for their contributions in ways that are both measurable and immeasurable. Barb and Reds began watching the Hawks in the early ‘70’s when their son, Jack, was manager of the boy’s basketball team. When Fran Mulroy, the boy’s JV coach, took over the girl’s program, Barb and Reds went with him and began following the girls. They soon met one for Fran’s assistants, Tom Mulligan, and a symbiotic relationship began. Reds has been helping him ever since in his progression through the ranks to the position of head coach. Nary a Hawk girls’ basketball game can be seen, be it fall, winter and summer, without Barb and Reds visible, Reds helping to coach and Barb adding encouragement behind the bench. They also formed and still run the HTHS girl’s basketball booster club, organizing candy sales, car washes and beach towel sales. As time went on, they also adopted the girls’ soccer and softball teams and are always at the field, regardless of the weather, supporting their girls. In true family form, Jack, his wife Joan and his brother Chris now all attend every game also. They’re easy to find. Just look in the second row in the gymnasium, behind the Hawk team and you’ll find Reds, right in front of Barb, Jack, Joan and Chris.
