Kirk Earney
Track teams are comprised of a great variety of athletes ranging from brawny weight throwers to fleet sprinters to gangly jumpers. But perhaps the most versatile of the athletes are the middle distance runners who must combine speed with endurance for their trips around the track. One of the best in Hawk history was Kirk Earney.
Kirk was a critical component Coach Jim Elwell’s squads from 1988 through his graduation in 1991. Early in his career he competed on championship relay teams and grew to where he dominated the 800 and 1600 meter races in both the winter and the spring. He capped his career by winning the State Group I championship in both events in both his junior and senior year, a feat rarely accomplished once, much less twice. Proving that his endurance was top notch, he also was a key member of the Cross country teams that ranked among the top teams in the State, again ending the season as an individual state champion.
Kirk continued his success as a collegian at Rowan University where his teams twice qualified for the National Championships and he garnered individual awards including the championships of the NJAC in both the 5000 and 10000 meters. After graduation, Kirk returned to Haddon Twp and he is now a veteran member of the Haddon Township Police Department, currently in the position of community police officer. He lives in the district with his wife Jennifer, son Nathan and daughter Caitlyn .
