1981 Gymnastics Team
Going into the 1981 season, Coach Pete Williams was confident that he had a strong team. By the end of the season, his gymnasts confirmed his optimism. Led by co-captains Dave Twordzlo and Greg Williams, both of whom competed in all of the events, they started off strong and won the Devil’s Classic, a pre-season, state wide tournament that often identified the teams to be reckoned with. Filled with confidence, the squad combined the excellence of Twordzlo and Greg Williams with the special event artistry of Joe Caruso (parallel bars and vault), Tim Robertson (pommel horse) and Kenny Nelson (floor exercise and parallel bars) and dominated their competition in South Jersey. In addition to the Devils Classic trophy, the team added one for the South Jersey League championship and then another for the sectional title. They completed their season, undefeated in dual meets, by narrowly missing the crowning accomplishment of a state title. Along with many honors received by the gymnasts, Coach Williams’ preseason optimism was confirmed and he was recognized by his peers as Coach of the Year.
